Smash Your Scale & Pick Up Your Camera Webinar Series
Diet culture is toxic. And not just in our relationship to food and exercise.
Diet culture has messed up our relationship with images and photos too. It tells us that our body is wrong and that there is a normative and aspirational way we SHOULD be in order to be worthy. It makes us feel like we’re winning if we succeed but makes us feel like we’re failing if we don’t.
And it’s easy to not recognize it as such. Because diet culture has a way of inviting us to invite in and accept shame, rather than question why we’re feeling that shame and call out the oppressive systems making us feel that way.
Which is why I think it’s time for us to wake up from this relationship to photos. To stop placing blame on our bodies and start questioning why we feel this way at all. I think the most pivotal piece is to pick up the camera and engage in a conversation with ourselves through it, but I know that’s a big jump for folks which is why I wanted to also create a webinar series where we’re going to start out gently digging into these topics and throughout the 5 webinars we’re going to go deep and talk about some really powerful concepts that are going to shake up and wake up how you see yourself!
Let’s smash the scale (literally or metaphorically) and let ourselves free from those societal pressures…and make room for more non-judgement, more compassion, more kindness, more selfie taking and more diet culture rule-breaking!
So I’d love to invite you to join me for a new series this year called Smash the Scale & Pick up the Camera. In these 5 webinars spread out throughout 2018 we’ll dig into how and why diet culture has messed up our relationship to ourselves in images…and what we can do about it to reclaim our power back.
The Webinars include:
Being in Conversation with Ourselves – April 7th, 2018
In this first seminar of the series, you’ll learn about my approach of connecting to ourselves through the lens being a conversation with ourselves. For most of us our inner critic has been ruling that conversation and this is about bringing our own voice back into the equation…BUT, much like sitting with a friend and listening to them, we don’t have to have it all figured out to begin.
Ditching the Diet Culture Lens – June 2nd, 2018
In this seminar we dig into how diet culture has infiltrated our relationship with how we see ourselves through the lens. We’ll talk about calling out diet culture when we notice it and how the pressure we put on our photos is a visible expression of the pressure we put on our bodies. We’ll also dig into why we can make peace with food/movement and still struggle with the camera and how we can start crating the lens we WANT to see ourselves through outside of that.
Photo Expectations – August 25th, 2018
This seminar digs into the expectations we put on ourselves in our photos. We explore what we expect to see in the camera and why that can trap us. We’ll dig into where these expectations are learned from and I’ll share some tools for ditching our expectations…and making more room to SEE ourselves with compassion and witness our story and ourselves.
Reclaiming our Power – October 6th, 2018
In our Reclaiming our Power Webinar we dig into how when we’re in a critical relationship with our body, we are giving our power away and we’ll talk about how we can reclaim our power back. I’m especially excited to share in this webinar the idea of choosing observations rather than judgement and how that can be a really freeing realization.
How We Find Body Neutrality through the Lens – November 3rd, 2018
In our final webinar of the series we explore the concept of Body Neutrality. You’ll learn about how neutrality has come to play a part in the body acceptance movement and how putting a ton of pressure on ourselves to LOVE our bodies keeps us on the roller coaster of love vs hat and how embracing neutrality isn’t just settling for just feeling okay about our body, but is actually a whole option outside of the love vs hate, good vs bad roller coaster we can find ourselves on in our relationship to our body.
The series is designed for folks who:
- Folks exploring body acceptance but who find that despite all the work they’ve been doing in other facets of their life (making peace with food, exploring joyful movement) and are surprised that they still struggle with photos.
- Body Acceptance Practitioners who find they still struggle with photos despite teaching folks about having compassion for their body.
- Folks who still believe your body is wrong but feel the ground underneath that belief shaking. You don’t have to be at a specific place on your body compassion journey or feel like you “have it all figured out” to join!
I’ll give away the premise at the heart of all the webinars before we even begin…your photo isn’t wrong and your body in it isn’t wrong…no matter how much your inner critic might be telling you that “Sure, that might be the case for everyone else but MY body is wrong.” But what I’ve found in my own path as well as teaching workshops on selfies as a self-compassion and body acceptance tool for these last 7 years is that the only thing wrong in our relationship to photos is the messages we’ve been taught and internalized that are rooted in fatphobia, unrealistic body expectations. In these webinars we’ll wake up to the ways that these forces have infiltrated our relationship to photos. This isn’t an immediate process but happens in layers as we unravel and unlearn the messages we’ve absorbed about our body. And waking up to it is the first step.
This series and the Body Acceptance Selfie Series is designed to be a companion on your body acceptance journey, wherever you are on in that path.

Questions:
Can I join in for just one webinar?
I thought seriously about offering these webinars as an individual offerings but I decided not to because throughout the webinars we’re going to be building upon what we talked about in the previous ones. It’s going to be most powerful to watch all the webinars as a whole.
What if I can’t join the webinar live?
It’s no problem at all if you can’t join the webinar live. The day after our call I’ll be sending you over an email with the call recording and you’ll also be able to watch them in the Smash the Scale home on the Be Your Own Beloved website where they will be posted throughout the year as we do them. I wanted to make a home base for you to watch them all and be able to refer to them long after our call day.
Why are the prices in Canadian Dollars and what it it in US Dollars?
The prices are in Canadian Dollars because well…I’m Canadian! But don’t worry, it’s VERY easy to pay in US dollars or any other currency. You’ll notice I listed the approximate price in US Dollars and it’s approximate because the currency changes with time. But as you add the webinar to your PayPal Cart and continue forward in the process past the first screen, PayPal will let you know the price in US dollars that will be taking from your card/account before you press the final button to say YES to the series. And guess what lovely Americans…this is to your benefit as the difference between the two dollars as in your favour so you’re getting an extra deal here. If this all feels like too much and you’d like to pay the above price in US Dollars, I can indeed invoice you in US dollars but it would be the best deal to let PayPal do the work for you and I promise, it’s super easy (we Canadians are VERY used to paying in other currencies but I know it’s unfamiliar to lots of folks in the US).
