Sidewalk Wisdom

sidewalk wisdom 1

One of my favourite things about my neighbourhood (and there are so many things) is the sidewalk wisdom that I come across.

A few blocks away from my place there is a stretch of a few blocks where there are messages galore.  That, plus the occasion chalk message make for pretty inspiring photo walks.  I wonder who wrote all of them.  Was it the same person or a bunch of them.  Its  kind of like a love bomb walking through these few blocks and I will confess I often take that route in my photowalk specifically to see them.   Why not?

If you have any sidewalk messages you’ve come across, please don’t hesitate to share a link to your image!  I’d love to see the wisdom you come across.

Also…there is always potential to grab a piece of chalk and write one ourselves, especially one we might need to hear!

Before I Die

On the way to a Photographers Meet-up last night for the book ‘This is East Van 2’ I’m thrilled to have a photo in (a self-portrait too…yahoo) I stopped by this art piece that I’d heard was up called “Before I Die”.  The above is a panoramic of the piece (its really quite big).

It was filled with dreams, plans, things people want to manifest while they are here on the planet.  It felt like most of the answers were straight from the heart and it was really incredible to see.  Below the board was chalk to add your own dream/plan to the list.

The Before I Die Project originated on the side of a house in New Orleans by the artist Candy Chang.  I had read about it when it was up in New Orleans and now it seems like you can get a kit to create one in your own city.  Amazing, isn’t it!

For those of you in Vancouver who would like to go see it, this is located at Georgia and Main in an alley (just around the corner from that intersection).  Definitely worth checking out!

For those of you elsewhere, have you seen one in your town/city yet?

And if you feel like sharing…what is one thing you’d at to this list if it was in front of you right now?

Here are a few close ups of some of the things people wrote:

Wanderings

in the blur
As spring emerges, I’m trying to take little photo walks around my neighbourhood.

Scouting out the streets that are completely lined with cherry trees and checking in on some magnolia trees that are just starting to bloom.  I so love this season, when all around me things are blooming and we west coasters emerge from our grey winter cocoons.

Neighbourhood photo walks are feeling just right lately.  They are the perfect afternoon break from my computer and especially these days, it feels good to get more acquainted with what is in bloom.

I’d love to know, whats blooming in your world (either literally or metaphorically of course).
